Artist statement
The gaze as power, and the artwork as a way to reveal it—to question how we see, and how we react to the world. In my artistic process, I strive to create images that invite close examination.
In a world as visual as ours—a world built on “seeing and being seen”—I seek to reflect on what we see and what we don’t, what we think we see and what we truly perceive. Most of the time, it’s not our eyes that see, but our mind. I challenge the viewer to educate their gaze.
I walk through cities, taking photographs that later become the basis of my work. A key part of this process lies in the framing of the piece, in the detailed description of each figure, in the stories they tell... Crosswalks allow me to frame these characters and make the invisible visible. I immerse myself in the crowd—a crowd that draws me in, paralyzes me, moves me, surprises me, drags me, shakes me...
I paint what stirs me: people—their gestures, their gazes, their steps, their silences, their fears, their thoughts... their inner and outer worlds.
Alone or in a crowd.
